Me, my girlfriend and a male friend were carpooling to a function. My girlfriend was driving, and the male friend was picked up first. I was raised to always allow a person to sit with their partner out of respect, and in similar past situations people have always moved to the back immediately. When they arrived to my house, I walked to the passenger door kind of expecting him to offer up the seat out of curtsey. He rolled down the window and said “what?”. I responded “Can I sit in the front with (partner’s name)” and he was a bit shocked by the request. He moved to the back with no complaints but the rest of the ride was a little awkward. When we got home that night, my girlfriend was upset with me about my gesture and told me it was petty. I explained that I was under the impression that letting the driver’s partner sit with them was common curtsey and that I felt a little disrespected by the male friend. She did not at all agree and felt that it’s ridiculous to feel that way. I know it’s trivial and not that deep but am I being an asshole here?
