Our Commitment to Privacy
AITA Swipe is designed with privacy in mind. We believe you should be able to enjoy judging internet drama without compromising your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect (spoiler: very little) and how we use it.
What We DON'T Collect
We intentionally do not collect:
- Names, email addresses, or any personal identifiers
- Account information (no registration required)
- Location data beyond country-level analytics
- Device identifiers or fingerprinting data
- Social media profiles or external account information
- Any way to identify you personally across sessions
What We DO Collect
We collect minimal, anonymous data to keep the service running and make it better:
Anonymous Usage Data
- Swipe interactions: Which direction you swiped (for statistics like "65% agreed with you")
- Summary requests: When you use the AI summary feature
- Reddit link clicks: When you click to view original posts
- Basic analytics: Page views, session duration, bounce rates
Technical Data
- Browser type and version: To ensure compatibility
- Device type: Mobile vs desktop (for responsive design)
- Performance metrics: Load times and errors (to fix bugs)
- Country-level location: General geographic usage patterns only
Cookies and Local Storage
- Theme preference: Light/dark mode setting
- Anonymous session ID: To prevent you from voting on the same post twice
- Tutorial status: Whether you've seen the tutorial
- Ko-fi donation preferences: Whether you've dismissed donation prompts
How We Use This Data
The anonymous data we collect is used to:
- Show you statistics: "X% of people agreed with your vote"
- Prevent duplicate voting: Ensure you don't vote on the same post twice
- Improve performance: Identify and fix slow loading or errors
- Understand usage patterns: Which features people use most
- Remember your preferences: Dark mode, tutorial completion, etc.
Third-Party Services
Vercel Analytics
We use Vercel Analytics for basic, privacy-focused website analytics. Vercel does not use cookies and does not collect personal information. Data is anonymized and aggregated.
OpenAI API
AI summaries are generated using OpenAI's API. The Reddit post content is sent to OpenAI for processing, but no user data or voting information is included. OpenAI's data usage policy applies to this processing.
Reddit API
Content is fetched from Reddit's public API. We do not send any user data to Reddit - we only retrieve publicly available posts and comments.
Neon Database
Anonymous voting data and content is stored in a Neon (PostgreSQL) database. No personal information is stored.
Data Retention
- Anonymous votes: Stored indefinitely for statistical purposes
- Session cookies: Expire after 30 days of inactivity
- Analytics data: Aggregated and anonymized, retained for up to 2 years
- Reddit content: Cached temporarily, refreshed regularly from Reddit
Your Choices
You can:
- Clear cookies: Use your browser settings to clear all site data
- Disable cookies: The site will still work, but preferences won't be saved
- Use private browsing: For completely anonymous usage
- Block analytics: Use ad blockers or privacy tools if desired
Since we don't collect personal information, there's no account data to delete or modify.
Security
We implement standard security measures to protect the anonymous data we collect:
- HTTPS encryption for all communications
- Secure database connections and access controls
- Regular security updates and monitoring
- No storage of sensitive personal information
International Users
AITA Swipe is hosted on servers that may be located in different countries. Since we only collect anonymous data, this does not impact your privacy. The same privacy protections apply regardless of your location.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy occasionally. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Since we don't have your contact information, please check this page periodically if you're concerned about changes.
