first time posting here so i’m sorry if i got anything wrong with the title or anything, but i’m lost with what to do here. to start, i don’t have a commission contract, i think that’s important for this. i know that i should, but i’m a small artist, i always feel like i can’t ask for much. anyways, i did some comms for a client on twitter. first of all, they were the worst client i’ve ever had. they kept telling me to do drastically different styles and changed their mind after i was close to finishing multiple times. they also kept asking me for contradictory things; i.e. saying they wanted a character in double denim and then after i’d already rendered the denim they said they always wanted the pants black. i felt weird but i didn’t complain because they sent me a couple extra dollars and i’m broke. just need to stress that i was working on these comms for a long time with no complaints. it was gruelling but i needed the money. when all 3 comms were finally finished, i was super excited to post them. i had worked hard and was satisfied with the outcome + comms are my only form of income so i was itching to post them for advertising. then, the client messaged me a super long paragraph. they said that they saw me reply to a mutual saying i wouldn’t watch love island because i don’t like reality tv and they then went on to detail how it was a serious show and one of the couples went through a lot or something so it was disrespectful of me to publicly “disregard” the show. so, they didn’t want to be associated with me and they didn’t want art they paid for to be associated with my comment. i first apologised to them for my reply then i deleted the tweet and told them so. i also apologised publicly if i upset anyone. to be clear, i think these were all ridiculous things that i shouldn’t have had to do, but i was desperate. the comms had taken me so long with all the changes that i hadn’t had time to work on other comms OR draw anything else to post. even after all of that, and apologising to them again, they still didn’t want me to post them. this is where me having a contract probably would’ve helped. they sent me a message that was bizarrely worded and i interpreted it to mean they were asking if THEY could post the art, and so i agreed as i usually would. but after i already agreed they sent a message that made it clear they were actually telling ME to NEVER post the art. this may be my bad so, i accept that blunder. but then, as i was going to say that actually, no, i needed to post the art and that i did not want to agree to what they had asked, they blocked me. i’m left in a confusing position. i feel like i should be allowed to do whatever i want with my art, right? but then, i also technically agreed to what they asked and they paid for it, so if i post it they could say i agreed not to and then went back on my word and that could damage my client base. WIBTA if i posted the comms? was their request reasonable?
