My partner and I moved into a house in 2024 after living with 6 people. Out of our previous roommates we did invite one of them to live with us- you know the one that actually cleaned up after themselves, paid rent etc. Our roommate- we will call her Jen- moved in a few months after my partner and I signed the lease agreement with the management. By this time my partner and I covered the whole security deposit at move in, and Jen paid us back when she got settled. This was about $800 she paid out of the $2700 total we paid on our own. So let’s fast forward a bit. In March, we got a call saying that the owners of the house are selling. My partner, Jen and I started to share some ideas of where we might go. Jen was planning to move back home which was about 7 hours away and ultimately my partner got a job which made us move 3 hours away. We all agreed to put in our notice at the end of August as Jen needed more time, but my partner and I moved out in the beginning of July. We all agreed on this in June. I said that I would come back to the house and do majority of the basic cleaning. Jen said she would clean up after herself when she left. I purposely left basic cleaning supplies because I knew she didn’t own those items. The day I came out and cleaned Jen said she would be moved out. “Easy peasy” I thought to myself. Yeah. No. When I drove down 3 hours to the house the place was basically furnished. Moldy food in the fridge, torn up carpet from Jen’s pet. Pee marks from Jen’s pet on the walls (yes the house smells like pee!) I genuinely don’t know what she didn’t take. I was in disbelief. I sent Jen a text asked when she was coming back to grab the rest of her things and she sent a text along the lines of “I wasn’t able to fit it all in, let me know the cleaning charge. It shouldn’t be too much”. Oh hellllll no. I’ve lived in a few rentals before and I know owners/managements can be stingy with charges. I know she had time to sell or take things to the dump. I was beyond frustrated. I ended up moving all of her items to the garage and cleaned the house. And I mean a GOOD deep clean with the smell. Dusting, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, window cleaning AND EVERYTHING ELSE. I left a text to Jen saying she needed to come pick up the rest of her stuff and clean up the kitchen before the lease ended because it was not the management/ owners problem. Well, I never got a response after saying that to Jen, but I messaged recently and said I’m charging for bills. Well Jen responded and said she went to the house to pick stuff up but left large furniture for management/owners to clean. I responded quickly asking what items she actually left-I was left on open and never given a response. So as a decent human, I’m going down to clean it all up and take it to the dump. I’m using her portion of the security deposit for labor, gas money, dump fees and cleaning fees for myself. AITA for doing this?
