Hi! Today I went to have lunch with my mom at our local mall. In my country, you can buy food from different places but still sit together at the same table. The mall was really busy, so as soon as I saw an empty table, I sat down. It was a four-person table that could be separated into two smaller ones. I already had my food, but my mom went to get hers. While I was eating alone, an older woman came up, sat at my table, and asked if she could stay there. I said yes, but told her: “Let me just separate the tables because I’m waiting for one more person.” When I stood up to move the tables, I noticed she had already gone over to sit with another man at his table. She started talking to him about her life, so not wanting to interrupt, I asked the man if they wanted the other table since I didn’t need it. He said no, so I just sat back down and continued eating while waiting for my mom. When my mom came back and sat with me, I noticed the older woman staring at me. Then she turned and asked: “How many people were you waiting for?” I replied: “Just my mom, that’s why I offered the other table.” She gave me a disgusted look, and I felt awful. I’m the type of person who always tries to make others feel comfortable, even at my own expense, so I started crying while trying to explain that I hadn’t refused her to seat and that she probably just misunderstood the situation. So, AITA for not making sure she understood that I was separating the tables so she could sit down?
