I (25f) and my (29m) boyfriend are looking to get a place together within the next year. Currently he lives at home and has an empty tank next to his bed that he wants to fill with an emperor scorpion. We’ve talked about it at length and even gone to look for other animals he could keep in the empty tank, I’m fine with praying mantises, crabs, certain beetles, tarantulas but I am not ok with scorpions. I am currently going through a lot since I have a very shaky living situation and a lot of family issues going on and may have to put down my cat soon. He joked all day about getting the scorpion trying to convince me they’re ‘cute’ and then when we driving me home he brought it up again after me telling him he could put literally anything other than a scorpion or roach in the tank and I would not care and I said that for me it would be a dealbreaker in terms of living with him because I would be too freaked out by it and too worried about it getting loose and I wouldn’t even be able to sleep over at his current house with the tank being next to the bed. He told me that I was really mean and really hurt him and basically said that I said I would break up with him which isn’t what happened at all. I said I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to have preferences and set boundaries. I am willing to move to an area I didn’t originally want to live in for his work, I was willing to let him get a motorcycle even though I think they’re dangerous and I’m willing to allow him to keep insects when I’m not the biggest fan of them in general. I told him I should be more important to him than having a scorpion and if it was the other way around I would never bring something near him that made him that uncomfortable. AITA?
