In my high school friend group we’re all close and exchange birthday gifts every year. I’ve always refused gifts because I genuinely hate receiving them. My friends have respected this until now, our last year, when they insisted on giving me something and said I can’t join in the gifts anymore if I refuse. I don’t want gifts and the point of them feels defeated if they give me one anyway. They enjoy receiving gifts, so I don’t mind giving. We argued and now they won’t let me contribute unless I accept a gift for my upcoming birthday. A similar issue happened with photos earlier. I hate being in them but like having pictures of the group. They said I couldn’t have the photos on my phone unless I was in them, which I eventually accepted, deciding to edit myself out. But I can’t do that with gifts. So, WIBTA? I don’t want to accept a gift but I’m unsure whether to refuse this last time, especially since I know it will upset them.
